Germany: Nagelsmann resigns as coach

Four days after the humiliating elimination in the round of 16 of the World Cup against Paraguay, Julian Nagelsmann submitted his resignation from his post as Germany coach, several German media announced on Friday morning.

According to the daily “Bild” and Sky, Julian Nagelsmann, under contract until the summer of 2028, accepted the request of the German Federation to resign from his position which he had held since September 2023, a proposal which was made to him on Thursday after a three-hour meeting to analyze the new German fiasco in the World Cup.

The succession of Julian Nagelsmann (38 years old) should therefore open fairly quickly, with Jürgen Klopp (59 years old) as the overwhelming favorite. After successful stints on the bench at Mainz and Borussia Dortmund, Klopp became a legend at Liverpool, winning the English champion title in 2020, ending a 30-year drought, one year after the Champions League coronation.

In January 2024, he announced his departure from Liverpool at the end of the season, nine years after his arrival at the Reds in the fall of 2015. Since January 1, 2025, he has been under contract with Red Bull as global director of football, overseeing the various clubs owned by the Austrian energy drink brand.

The challenge for Nagelsmann’s successor promises to be immense, while Germany remains on three monumental humiliations in Mondiovision, in the final phase of the World Cup: two eliminations in the first round in 2018 and 2022, and an exit in the round of 16 four days ago in Foxborough near Boston against the very modest Paraguay (1-1, 4 tab to 3).
