PSG coach Luis Enrique said on Tuesday that his team was having a “catastrophic start to the season” in terms of results after conceding several draws and defeats in recent weeks.
“If we only talk about results, it’s a catastrophic start to the season but as a coach, we try to value everything that happens on the pitch. There are things to improve but we deserve more points,” declared Luis Enrique, on the eve of the double defending champion’s entry into the Champions League against Slovan Bratislava.
The last success of the Parisians dates back to August 12 during the Supercup won (2-1) against Aston Villa. Since then, they lost to Lens in the Champions Trophy (1-0) and drew (2-2) against Rennes and Lille and lost to Monaco (2-1) on Friday in Ligue 1.
“We have to show the players the small margins for improvement that we have. We didn’t have much luck when the opponents struck: the goals we conceded were very good,” added the coach.
“The past doesn’t interest me”
“At the end of the season, the balance will be achieved (…). We need to improve our efficiency but also our ability to stay focused throughout the match,” he underlined, claiming to put “pressure on his players all the time”.
He repeats, “the past is the past, it doesn’t interest me. You must renew your driving log. Everyone wants to play against us, we have to get out of our comfort zone, we have to reinvent ourselves every day.”
For his part, PSG captain Marquinhos felt that PSG was making “small errors which are not up to our level”.
“For a defender, it’s something that hurts to concede goals, we concede a lot of goals at the start of the season. We know why, we talked, we are working to improve. It’s all a collective effort,” explained the Brazilian.
What are these errors? “I can’t go into too much detail. It’s nothing special. It’s above all the desire, the intensity, the pressing. At the start of the season, it’s normal that we lose the feeling when we lose the ball, the counter-pressing… The defense also has to come out and move forward when the attackers press, these are small details. Today there was a video session, the coach showed us what we needed to improve,” said Marquinhos.
