Japanese creator Hideo Kojima, author of the Metal Gear saga, announced Thursday that he was now working with the American Microsoft on his next spy game, “Physint”, after the “unexpected” cancellation of the title previously developed with the Japanese Sony.
“In mid-June this year, we unexpectedly received a notice from PlayStation Studios informing us of the cancellation of the Physint project,” wrote the 63-year-old developer on the social network
A return to spy games
Developed by his studio Kojima Productions, created in 2015 after his departure from Konami, “Physint” promises to be Kojima’s return to the “Metal Gear”-style spy video games that made him famous in the 1990s. The success of “Metal Gear Solid” (1998 in Japan), the third opus in the series and the first in 3D, is inseparable from that of the first PlayStation, and the saga has long been associated with Sony consoles.
Since the release of the last opus “Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain” in 2015, the Japanese creator has worked on a new series, Death Stranding, an exploration game in a post-apocalyptic world halfway between a hiking simulation and a classic action game.
The Japanese creator has not indicated whether “Physint,” initially developed as part of a partnership with PlayStation, will be exclusive to Microsoft machines. He is working in parallel on another project, “OD”, a horror video game co-written with American director Jordan Peele (“Get Out”) and developed in partnership with Xbox.
