After a summer of totally crazy football with the 2026 World Cup, the European season truly resumes its rights this Tuesday, with the return of the Champions League. Unfortunately, the competition will take place without any Swiss club for the second consecutive season. National champion, FC Thun, logically did not manage to qualify for the league phase.
For the most passionate fans of Swiss football, however, there is an alternative solution: supporting the team with the most Swiss players. For this 2026-2027 edition of the Champions League, it is Club Brugge. The reigning Belgian champion relies on three Swiss.
Yann Sommer and two young nuggets
The best known of them is obviously Yann Sommer. The former Swiss goalkeeper arrived at Club Brugge this summer from Inter Milan. And he has already acclimatized perfectly since he achieved four shutouts in five league matches.
In addition to the former favorite of Nati fans, the Belgian team relies on two gems of Swiss football who have decided to leave the Super League for the Pro League, a more renowned championship on the European scene, this summer.
In July, Club Brugge paid 6 million euros to secure the services of FC Zurich midfielder Cheveyo Tsawa (19 years old). The Swiss international hopeful has not yet started in the league. Worse, he showed himself in the wrong way by being the only player to miss his penalty during the penalty shootout of the Belgian Super Cup, lost on July 31 against Union Saint-Gilloise.
The club, which begins its Champions League campaign this Tuesday against Aston Villa, also counts on striker Andrej Vasovic (18 years old), bought for 7.5 million euros this summer from FC Lucerne.
8 Swiss in the Champions League
In addition to the three players from Club Brugge, five other Swiss will play in this new edition of the Champions League. Here they are: Gregor Kobel (Borussia Dortmund), Manuel Akanji (Inter Milan), Johan Manzambi (Aston Villa), Luca Jaquez (Stuttgart) and Loun Srdanovic (Lille).
Dereck Kutesa (AEK Athens), announced on departure, and Leonidas Stergiou (Stuttgart) do not appear on the lists of players registered by their club for the competition.
