England and Ghana separated 0-0 at the World Cup on the second day of Group L. A good point taken for an extremely defensive Black Stars team, by all accounts, yet the team coach railed against the refereeing at the end of the match.
According to Carlos Queiroz, England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford should have been sent off for a collision outside the box with Prince Adu. And there was also a penalty after contact between Ezri Konsa and the same Prince Adu.
“They didn’t lose because the VAR was on vacation,” quipped Carlos Queiroz about England, reports “L’Equipe”. He added: “If VAR hadn’t gone for coffee, he would have awarded the penalty and we would have won the match. They were lucky. I like to have a little coffee too, but this was an obvious penalty. There should have been a red card.”
Everyone will judge. But Eurosport notes that some agree with the Ghana coach, even among former stars of the Three Lions.
This is Alan Shearer’s comment on the BBC about the exit of the English goalkeeper, who had finally obtained a foul in his favor. “The first ball behind the defense creates chaos and Pickford ventures into unknown territory on this one. I don’t think it was necessary to call a foul for England at all. It should have been a foul for Ghana.”
And here is Wayne Rooney’s, still on the BBC, on the other contentious action. “I think there is a penalty. Konsa is taking a huge risk. His feet are off the ground and he comes into the air to counter the man, not the ball. For me, this penalty could easily have been awarded.
