Steven Spielberg was the guest of the podcast “The Rest Is Entertainment”, while he is on the promotional tour for his new film “Disclosure Day” and spoke about his unsuccessful and repeated attempts to make a “James Bond”.
“I contacted producer Cubby Broccoli after the success of Jaws. I had always dreamed of making a James Bond film after seeing “Dr. No”. So I called Cubby and offered. I told him, “If you need a director, I’d be happy to direct a film.” And he refused,” Spielberg explains.
A few years after the release of “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” Cubby Broccoli called Steven Spielberg because he wanted to use the film’s famous five-note musical melody in a scene from “Moonraker.”
“I told him, ‘I’ll offer you a deal. I authorize you to use all five notes if you let me make a ‘James Bond’.” He refused. But I still gave it full five marks. Cubby never explained why he didn’t make me part of the Bond family.”
And today, what is Steven Spielberg’s position? “If someone asked me today to direct a James Bond movie, I would say, ‘You can’t afford to pay me.’
