AC Milan of the Swiss Zachary Athekame and Ardon Jashari terminated on Monday the contracts of its coach Massimiliano Allegri and several executives of its sports management, the day after a rout at home in the Italian Championship which deprived the Lombard club of the Champions League.
“For much of the season we remained in the top two places in the championship, with the real possibility of fighting for the Scudetto. However, the end of the season was well below the level displayed so far and last night’s disappointing defeat transformed this season into an unequivocal failure,” Milan explained in a press release.
“Profound reorganization”
“The time has come for change and a profound reorganization of the club’s sports sector. The missions of general administrator Giorgio Furlani, sports director Igli Tare, head coach Massimiliano Allegri and technical director Geoffrey Moncada conclude with immediate effect,” the text continues.
Special advisor to the owner, former striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, much criticized by fans, however kept his position.
Third in Serie A and therefore in a favorable position to play in the next Champions League at the kick-off of its last match of the season on Sunday, Milan finished the evening in 5th place after its defeat against Cagliari (2-1).
The Lombard club, whose minimum objective was to participate in the very profitable C1, will compete in the Europa League after being overtaken by AS Rome (3rd) and Como (4th), winners respectively in Verona (2-0) and Cremona (4-1).
Allegri, 58, will have remained in office for less than a year. The former Juventus coach, who had already coached Milan between 2010 and 2014, paid for the collapse of his team during the return phase. She has in fact only pocketed 28 points in the last 19 days compared to 42 in the first leg.
Fifth coach since 2024
The club, owned by the American group RedBird Capital Partners led by Gerry Cardinale, will therefore have a fifth coach since 2024 after Stefano Pioli, the Portuguese Paulo Fonseca and Sergio Conceiçao, and Allegri.
To succeed Allegri, the names of Antonio Conte, who has just terminated his contract with Naples, and Raffaele Palladino, stationed in Bergamo, are cited by the specialist press.
