Celtic Glasgow goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, 39, announced on Wednesday that he was stopping his career following a serious shoulder injury.
“When my contract with Celtic comes to an end in June, I will end my career as a professional footballer,” he explained to Danish television TV2.
“It was a decision that was made for me after consulting several surgeons, specialists about my shoulder, who explained to me that I should not count on the possibility of coming back and playing again at the highest level,” he said.
The former Nice player (2022-2023) aggravated, in February against Stuttgart, in the Europa League play-off, an injury that occurred in the Danish selection last year.
“It’s not funny, it’s not at all how I would have wanted my career to end. But on the other hand, everything has an end,” he added.
Leicester goalkeeper from 2011 to 2022, Kasper Schmeichel was part of the incredible epic of the “Foxes” until the historic coronation in the Premier League in 2016 before winning the FA Cup against Chelsea five years later. After a short stint at Nice, then at Anderlecht, he played for Celtic since 2024.
Son of Peter Schmeichel, legendary former Manchester United goalkeeper to whom he has long been compared, he who was trained at rival Manchester City, he amassed 120 caps with Denmark.
