The Polish Iga Swiatek won her first title of the year Thursday evening by clearly dominating the Kazakhstani Elena Rybakina, who seemed at the end of her strength, with a score of 6-2, 6-3 in the final of the WTA 1000 in Toronto.

Swiatek, six-time winner of Grand Slam tournaments and ex-world No.1, had so far not reached a single final in 2026 and her defense of the title at Wimbledon ended in the third round.

However, she won hands down against Rybakina, world No.2 and Australian Open champion, thus offering herself a first coronation in Canada. This success will allow him to move up from eighth to fifth place in the world as the US Open approaches.

Rybakina, who stayed on the court until 1 a.m. to win her semi-final against American Coco Gauff, got off to a sluggish start, giving Swiatek a break in the first game following two double faults.

She then knew how to react by winning her next two service games without conceding a single point, but after missing two break points in the sixth game, she again gave up her challenge to Swiatek.

Trailing 5-2, Rybakina saw her opponent serve to win the first set after just over 20 minutes of play.

Swiatek, who looked extremely confident on serve, won the set with a shutout, pocketing her set point with a second serve winner with spin.

The Pole was virtually untroubled in the second set, taking control by leading 3-2 after a break, then breaking Rybakina again in the final game with a backhand winner on her second match point.
