At least two people died at dawn on Wednesday during major celebrations organized in Mexico City to celebrate Mexico’s qualification for the round of 16 of the 2026 Football World Cup, municipal authorities said.
A 19-year-old young woman and a 44-year-old man died of asphyxiation, said the capital’s Secretary of Health. The local press reports a third victim, which has not, however, been confirmed at this stage by the authorities.
Mexico beat Ecuador 2-0 on Tuesday at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, clinching their ticket to the round of 16. It was also the first knockout match won in the World Cup in 40 years by the Mexicans.
More than a million people gathered to party in the streets of the Mexican capital, mainly around the Angel of Independence monument in the center of the capital, according to city hall estimates.
