Czech Marketa Vondrousova, former 6th player in the world and Wimbledon winner in 2023, was suspended four years for refusing a doping test in December 2025, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced on Monday.
“Under anti-doping rules, the sanction imposed on a player who refuses to submit to a test must be the same as that which would have been imposed on her if she had tested positive,” Itia said in a press release.
Vondrousova, 26, has not played on the WTA circuit since January. She is currently ranked 122nd in the world. In her last appearance at a Grand Slam tournament, she reached the quarterfinals of the US Open in August 2025.
At Wimbledon, in 2023, she beat the Tunisian Ons Jabeur in the final. The Czech also reached the final of Roland-Garros in 2019, where she was beaten by Australian Ashleigh Barty.
Vondrousova did not submit a sample during a check carried out at her home on December 3, 2025 around 8:00 p.m., the ITIA said. She justified her refusal by citing stress and mental health problems, as well as fears for her safety.
The ITIA tribunal concluded that the evidence provided by the accused provided “no convincing justification”.
Vondrousova’s lawyer, Jan Exner, told AFP that the player reserved the right to appeal. The suspension lasts until June 21, 2030, the ITIA said.
