Pokopia, a new spin-off game
On Thursday, the series will welcome a new spin-off game: “Pokémon Pokopia”. A clever mix of the very popular video games “Minecraft” and “Animal Crossing”, the title is expected on Switch 2, Nintendo’s new console released in June.
Born in 1996 as a game on Nintendo’s portable console, Pokémon quickly became a global phenomenon. Available on numerous consoles and mobile phones, Pokémon games have sold more than 500 million copies, according to figures provided by The Pokémon Company and Nintendo.
Inspired by the Japanese summer tradition of insect hunting, the game involves capturing and training big-eyed “pocket monsters,” inspired by both mice and dragons, to fight.
12 billion in revenue
The franchise has since expanded to films, an animated series, and the popular augmented reality mobile game “Pokémon Go”.
The Pokémon brand generated $12 billion in licensing revenue in 2024, according to License Global, more than gaming giant Mattel.
