Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull) will start in pole position for the United States Grand Prix on Sunday (start at 9 p.m.), 19th round out of 24 of the Formula 1 season, after setting the best qualifying time on Saturday at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin (Texas).
The reigning four-time world champion is ahead of the Briton Lando Norris (McLaren) and the Monegasque Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), while the Australian leader of the world championship, Oscar Piastri (McLaren), will only start in sixth position.
A Piastri who did not seem comfortable on the Texan circuit and who will be under threat from Verstappen and Norris in the drivers’ standings if he fails to improve on Sunday.
In fourth position, it is the winner of the last GP in Singapore, George Russell, who will start alongside Leclerc. The fight for the constructors’ standings, here between Mercedes and Ferrari, will begin from the start.
On the third row, the other Ferrari driver, Lewis Hamilton, will be just in front of Piastri. With red cars which seem to have regained a little speed in the United States, Hamilton will perhaps be able to slip into the race for the podium.
The Italian Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) and the Briton Oliver Bearman (Haas) will share the fourth row, just ahead of the Spaniards Carlos Sainz (Williams) and Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), the last qualified in Q3, on Saturday.
In Q1, Frenchman Isack Hadjar (Racing Bull) jeopardized all his chances by crashing his car into the safety barriers. He will start from the last row on the grid, Sunday at the start of the Grand Prix (9 p.m.).
