The Carroll County Observer will be tracking the early voting turnout throughout the 2022 General Election (Oct 27th – Nov 3rd).

Here is a recap of early voting in Carroll County through day 5:

Total votes cast in Carroll County through day 5: 7,576

  • Westminster continues to have the lion share of early voters through day 4 (3,973 votes cast at that location in four days).
  • The turn out numbers increased on day 5 (Monday) as expected…although not as high as expected. It is possible the not great weather plus Halloween possibly reduced the numbers on day 5.

Of the 7,576 votes cast on days 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5:

  • 2,156 are registered Democrats
  • 91 are registered Green, Libertarian, WCP or Other
  • 4,322 are registered Republicans
  • 1,007 are registered as Unaffiliated / Independent

The 7,576 votes cast to date makes up 5.94% of eligible voters in the county. This percentage continues to top the statewide early voting % turnout (4.49% statewide through day 5).

Fun Fact: Of the jurisdictions in Maryland with over 100,000 eligible voters…Carroll County has the second highest percentage of early voters to eligible voters:

  1. Harford County: 6.14%
  2. Carroll County: 5.94%
  3. Howard County: 5.68%
  4. Baltimore County: 4.77%
  5. Anne Arundel County: 4.72%
  6. Charles County: 4.64%
  7. Frederick County: 4.10%
  8. Prince George’s County:  3.87%
  9. Montgomery County 3.78%
  10. Baltimore City: 2.55%

Obviously mail in voting has likely changed how many people come out and vote early. The question that should be asked…do we still need 8 days of early voting now that we have a significantly expanded mail in voting system in Maryland? Something to think about for the future.

Looking back at the past 2 Gubernatorial elections:

  • 2018: 9,891 total votes cast through day 5 of early voting in Carroll County (2 early voting locations)
  • 2014: 4,165 total votes cast through day 5 of early voting in Carroll County (1 early voting location)

The Observer will continue to track this data daily through Early Voting.
