The New Zealand Football Federation announced on Friday that it was withdrawing its support for FIFA boss Gianni Infantino and called for an independent review of his criticized, then aborted, plan to open FIFA to private investors.
Gianni Infantino is once again under fire this week after the European (UEFA), North American (Concacaf) and Asian (AFC) confederations, determined to see him leave the head of Fifa before he can seek a new mandate in March 2027, published a joint open letter to world football, denouncing his management of Fifa and a “break of trust”.
“After careful consideration, the NZF believes that certain decisions and actions within FIFA have contributed to a breakdown in trust and a deepening of divisions within international football,” the association said, before adding: “An independent review is necessary to restore trust.”
“This moment represents an opportunity for all FIFA member associations to advocate for strengthened governance, greater accountability and greater transparency, which are fundamental to maintaining confidence in the management of world football,” the association said.
The New Zealand Football Association was the latest FIFA member to withdraw its support for Gianni Infantino on Friday.
The Swiss citizen, a candidate for his own succession at the head of FIFA, has been mired in a crisis since the disclosure of his contested and ultimately abandoned project to open FIFA to private investors.
