World No. 1 Jannik Sinner eliminated Serbian Novak Djokovic (8th) in the Wimbledon semi-finals on Friday, depriving the former circuit boss of an opportunity to win the 25th Grand Slam title that he is relentlessly chasing at the age of 39.
Winner 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 of the seven-time winner of the tournament, the Italian title holder will try on Sunday to achieve the double against the German Alexander Zverev (3rd), qualified earlier in the day thanks to his victory in three sets against the British Arthur Féry (114th).
Djokovic had already lost against Sinner (24 years old) in the semi-finals of the last edition of Wimbledon, but took a resounding revenge in January by eliminating his younger brother in the last four of the Australian Open, after a sumptuous five-set showdown.
It was then the first victory for “Nole” against Sinner after five losses in a row.
Duel of winners
After his defeat on Friday, the man with 24 Grand Slam titles – a record he shares with Australian Margaret Court, who won certain major tournaments before the start of the Open era in 1968 – is now trailing 7 wins to 5 in his duels against the Italian.
After his final in Melbourne at the start of the year, lost against the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz (2nd), the Serbian was eliminated in the third round of Roland-Garros at the end of May, victim of the young Brazilian talent Joao Fonseca (27th).
Opposed on Sunday for the title on the London turf, Sinner and Zverev have already faced each other in the final of the Australian Open in 2025. Sinner won the match in three sets.
The world No1 has four Grand Slam titles to his name, but his last one dates back to the 2025 edition of Wimbledon.
Zverev, for his part, has just won his first major trophy at Roland Garros at the age of 29, after three defeats in Grand Slam finals. He had never made it past the round of 16 at Wimbledon.
