On Saturday evening, Paris Saint-Germain won the second consecutive Champions League in its history. The Parisian victory against Arsenal on penalties was celebrated almost everywhere in the French capital and numerous damages took place. A lot of videos are circulating on social networks and showing scuffles with the police, pedestrians on the ring road or even burned cars.
Among these, one extract is particularly creating buzz: a filmed extract of a few seconds where we see Karl Olive climbing on the hood of a car. Why does this sequence fuel controversy more than the others? Because, Karl Olive is a deputy member of the Renaissance party, that of the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron.
Obviously, in a political climate that is still tense in France, the far right jumped at the opportunity to make its propaganda and to criticize the behavior of the former mayor of the commune of Poissy. “Macronist MP Karl Olive climbs onto a car in an atmosphere of excitement. How do you expect us to get out of this,” wrote Florian Philippot on X.
“Passion took precedence over reason”
Karl Olive broadcast a video on the same social network on Sunday to explain his gesture and try to put an end to the controversy. “I got on the car of a friend, Pascal, for a few seconds. Was this the best image to give when elected? Probably not.”
Former sports journalist, Karl Olive is a fervent supporter of Paris Saint-Germain. “For a few moments, passion took precedence over reason. It was undoubtedly childish, I readily admit. And I apologize for that.”
The MP concluded his message by highlighting the immense popular joy which accompanied the PSG title and the tremendous work of the police.
