Today is a BIG day in the 2022 General Election. The Carroll County Board of Elections will begin counting Mail In Ballots.

As of November 8th there are 13,135 returned Mail In Ballots. See the county breakdown of sent and returned mail in ballots for the state of Maryland here: https://elections.maryland.gov/press_room/2022_stats/GG22/Absentees%20Sent%20and%20Returned%20by%20County.pdf

Here is a breakdown of mail in votes by party affiliation:

  • 6,433 mail in ballots are from Democrats
  • 4,514 mail in ballots are from Republicans
  • 2,188 mail in ballots are from “Others”

While nearly all local races in Carroll County have already been decided there is ONE important race where Mail In Ballots could make a difference: Carroll County Board of Education. Here is where that race stands after Early Voting and Election Day Voting:

  • Tara Battaglia: 28,985
  • Steve Whisler: 27,629
  • Jim Miller: 25,300
  • Patricia Ann Dorsey: 21,134
  • Amanda Jozkowski: 19,753
  • Tom Scanlan: 18,017

If mail in ballot results are similar to the 2022 Primary…here is my prediction:

Given the numbers after Election Day I believe that Tara Battaglia and Steve Whisler are going to be on the Board of Education for the next term. The race now is for the third seat this election cycle.

Jim Miller holds a 4,166 vote advantage over current Board member Patricia Dorsey. With the number of mail in ballots remaining, this third seat may still be in play. I believe we will find out how this third seat ends up after November 10th (1st mail in ballot canvass)

My analysis and gut tells me that Amanda Jozkowski and Tom Scanlan will not be elected this election cycle.

Know that the above is my “prediction” and the mail in ballots could confirm that prediction or could significantly change it depending on the results.

Here is a schedule from the Carroll County Board of Elections related to the 2022 General Election:
