Invited on the set of “Quotidien”, Hailey Bieber undoubtedly thought she was paying France a compliment. She especially sowed confusion by claiming that her husband, Justin Bieber, was French.
As she spoke of her affection for Paris and France, the 29-year-old American said: “My husband is French, I like that too.” A statement that immediately appealed to Yann Barthès. “He is French, yes,” she insisted when the presenter asked for confirmation.
Faced with a visibly surprised Yann Barthès, who reminds her that the singer is Canadian, Hailey Bieber persists: “He is from Canada, but he is also French. His family is French.” However, she was not able to specify which region of France her family would come from.
French-speaking roots
Justin Bieber is actually not French. Born in London, in the Canadian province of Ontario, the 32-year-old singer nevertheless has French-speaking family roots which could explain his wife’s confusion.
According to several American media, part of his maternal family is originally from Quebec. His grandmother would have grown up in a French-speaking community and his great-grandfather would have been born in Bonaventure, in Gaspésie.
Justin Bieber can therefore claim French-Canadian or Quebec origins in his family tree. But these obviously do not make him a French citizen.
