Who has never dreamed of being in a relationship with a global star? A Belgian man firmly believed that he had a long-distance romantic relationship with Celine Dion for more than three years. He was actually the victim of a type of scam that has become common in recent years.
Karla, his daughter, recounted this mishap in the program “WinWin”, broadcast on the Flemish channel Radio 2. Her father lost thousands of euros in this scam. Indeed, the fake Céline Dion having made him believe that she was going through a bad financial situation, the Belgian paid her at least 10,000 euros by purchasing Carrefour gift cards, the codes of which he then sent her by message.
His daughter also told another anecdote. During the Christmas period of 2025, her father waited all day for a taxi supposed to take him to the airport, where a private jet belonging to the singer was to take him to the United States. “My father sat at the front door all day, his suitcases packed,” his daughter explains. Despite his family’s warnings, the man continued to believe in this fictitious relationship.
This type of scam is called “love scamming” and involves creating a fake profile on the Internet to seduce a victim, gain their trust and extract money from them. Recently, several women, including a French woman, believed they were in a relationship with actor Brad Pitt and lost large sums of money, up to several hundred thousand francs.
