Brazilian striker Neymar avoided commenting on Monday on a possible retirement at the end of his contract with Santos, while his father said he would “continue playing football”.
The 34-year-old star ended his international career in the Brazilian jersey after the defeat of the “Seleçao” in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup against Norway, punctuated by a final penalty which vainly reduced the gap (1-2), and ended in a torrent of tears.
Neymar is, however, bound by a contract with his favorite club until December. “When my contract ends, I will think about whether to stay at Santos, leave or stop playing. I really don’t know what I’m going to do,” he said when asked about his future, during a charity auction he himself organized in São Paulo.
“We’re going little by little, game by game. I feel good physically,” added the former FC Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain player, weighed down by a series of injuries in recent years.
His father and representative, Neymar da Silva Santos, was also questioned about it. “Neymar loves playing football. What else is he going to do? He doesn’t have a medical degree yet, so he’s going to continue playing,” he quipped.
Neymar is regularly mocked for his lifestyle and was recently widely criticized for participating in a poker tournament while his teammates were playing a South American Cup match in Venezuela.
Santos must face Ecuadorian club Macará next week in the round of 16 of this competition.
