On the ice, Nico Hischier is a player who works a lot for others and who puts himself at the service of the collective. Outside, the star of the Swiss ice hockey team demonstrates the same qualities. Saturday afternoon, he came to the aid of a family in distress on the Aare, as reported 20 Minutes.
The family, made up of two adults and two children, was on an inflatable boat drifting towards the Engehalde Dam in Bern when the New Jersey Devils NHL player appeared as a savior. “They could no longer leave this dangerous place on their own,” says a witness. I saw Nico Hischier heroically save a family from a delicate situation.”
Contacted by 20 Minutes, the Bernese cantonal police confirmed an intervention in the area shortly before 4 p.m. “An inflatable boat with two adults and two children found itself in distress for reasons that have yet to be clarified.”
The intervention involved the Berne cantonal police, professional firefighters, Sauvetage Berne, an ambulance which was there as a precaution and third parties. Of which Nico Hischier was therefore a part.
A modest hero
The Haut-Valaisan showed his characteristic modesty when questioned about his heroic act. “In this situation, any help is welcome and we were all relieved that in the end no one was hurt,” he stressed.
Like every year, Nico Hischier spends some time in Switzerland during the summer before flying to North America for the new NHL season. He recently signed a 5-year contract extension at $11.7 million per season. Enough to make him the highest paid Swiss player in the world.
