“After 12 World Championships, 3 Olympic Games and countless unforgettable moments, the time has come for me to retire from the national team.” It was with these words that goalkeeper Reto Berra (39) said goodbye to the Swiss ice hockey team.

He will thus have played his last World Cup last spring at home. He obtained a fourth silver medal on the international scene. “Wearing the Switzerland jersey in front of our own fans, hearing the national anthem and singing with you after the matches are things I will never forget. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

He adds: “Now is the time for me to let my body rest. It is also the time to give way to young goalkeepers, to open the door for them and give them the chance to write their own history in the national team jersey. I wholeheartedly wish them to experience exactly the same moments and the same emotions that I had the chance to experience.

With the Swiss team, Reto Berra rose to second place in the world in 2013, 2018, 2024 and 2026. He was not part of the selection when he won the silver medal in 2025 in Stockholm.

If his international career ends, he will still continue his club adventure. After eight seasons in the colors of Fribourg-Gottéron, punctuated by a historic title in April, the Zurich resident will make his return to his home canton since he signed a two-year contract with Kloten.
