The German Football Federation (DFB) announced on Saturday that it had reached an agreement with Jürgen Klopp for him to become the new coach of the Nationalmannschaft, but must still obtain the approval of Klopp’s current employer, the Red Bull group.
“The president of the DFB, Bernd Neuendorf, and his vice-president Hans-Joachim Watzke had on Friday, in New York, a first in-depth meeting with Jürgen Klopp concerning a possible assumption of duty as national coach,” the body indicated in its press release.
“During this constructive exchange, agreement was reached on the main points of a potential contract. Discussions will continue next week. Both parties are confident that the negotiations – subject to an agreement with Klopp’s current employer, Red Bull – can ultimately be successfully concluded.
“A possible contract must be definitively approved by the supervisory board and the general assembly of the DFB,” the press release concludes.
Since the resignation of Julian Nagelsmann after the pitiful elimination of Germany by Paraguay on penalties (1-1, 4 tab to 3) in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, Klopp, 59, is the candidate favored by the DFB to succeed him.
After successful stints on the bench at Mainz and Borussia Dortmund, Jürgen Klopp became a legend at Liverpool, winning the English champion title in 2020, ending a 30-year drought, one year after a Champions League title.
He left Liverpool in June 2024 after nine seasons.
Since January 1, 2025, the German has been under contract with Red Bull as global director of football, overseeing the various clubs owned by the Austrian energy drink brand.
Since winning its 4th World Cup in 2014, Germany has suffered three defeats in the World Cup: two eliminations in the first round in 2018 and 2022, and an exit in the round of 16 at the end of June.
