Several hundred people were evacuated from a nightclub ravaged by flames in Kehl (southwest of Germany) near Strasbourg, a place frequented by many French people, German police said on Sunday.
The fire broke out around 3:45 a.m., and “then spread to the entire building,” she said in a press release.
Around 750 people were inside the K Club at the time of the incident and were able to evacuate the premises. Three of them were taken care of by the emergency services.
Images broadcast in German media show a huge fire devouring the roof of the nightclub, reminiscent of the bar fire that occurred during New Year’s Eve in the Crans-Montana resort which left 41 dead and 115 injured.
But unlike what happened in Switzerland, the evacuation went well, according to witnesses.
“Suddenly we heard, there was a fire! There were several announcements in German, French and English asking us to evacuate. The staff managed it really well. They reassured us. The evacuation took place very quickly,” testified young French people quoted by the local newspaper DNA.
An investigation was opened into the fire, the cause of which was not immediately identified.
