David Smith (co-owner of the Baltimore Sun) will be attending a meeting in Carroll County on May 7, 2024. Mr. Smith will be a guest speaker at the Republican Club of Carroll County meeting and will be discussing “Bias in the media” at their meeting. Here are the details:

Time: 6:30pm – 8:30pm
Location: Carroll County FOP Lodge in Westminster
Back in January of 2024 it was announced “Sinclair Broadcast’s David Smith buys Baltimore Sun”
“In buying Baltimore Sun Media Group, Smith will also acquire the Towson Times, Carroll County Times, Capital Gazette papers in Annapolis and several community outlets.”
“Sinclair owns Fox 45, a TV station started by Smith’s father, which is known for its focus on crime and intense criticism of city officials.”
“Smith says he has brought in one partner, Armstrong Williams.”
Per NPR: “Smith has said he paid nine figures – meaning at least $100 million – for The Sun, though that may include the significant cost of services, such as its content management system, provided by the previous owner, the investment fund Alden Global Capital.”
Also in that article “The Sun now has no foreign bureaus and a dwindling number of reporters. According to local newsroom union officials, there are about 60 journalists, down from more than 300…”
In April of 2024 a local writer from Carroll County (Ethan Reese) began having articles published in the Carroll County Times. Some of the Observer readers may know work from Ethan Reese from his local entity Maryland Muckraker.
