The British bank Barclays announced Thursday that it would cut around 5,000 jobs, or 5% of its workforce, by the end of 2026, as part of its adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) which allows it to gain efficiency.
“Around 60%” of these job cuts “concern support functions, in particular a reduction in the number of developers, with AI making our teams more productive,” a spokesperson for the banking giant told AFP.
The group, which employed 93,000 employees around the world at the end of 2025, intends to carry out “organizational simplification” and “efficiency gains linked to technological changes driven by AI”, according to the presentation of its latest results.
Its net profit in the third quarter increased by 13% to 1.65 billion pounds (1.81 billion €), helped by the performance of its traders.
