Scary tornado hits Sicily

The images filmed by residents are as impressive as they are frightening. Two waterspouts hit western Sicily, in the Trapani region this Friday morning.

According to local media, it was a double waterspout which formed at sea, raising large columns of water, then transforming into a sort of violent tornado upon hitting land, towards the port of Marsala.

There, there was significant damage and there were 9 injuries, according to the Italian press agency Ansa.

The results could have been worse. A school was hit with 273 children inside. Some were taken to hospital, but in the end only 6 had injuries described as minor. One of the school’s annexes was completely destroyed. “The Lord helped us,” commented the director of the establishment, Leonardo Gulotta.

Two of the other injured were in a car that was thrown into a ravine, Ansa said.

The situation is under control in terms of the health emergency, the Trapani authorities said. Too early, however, for any assessment of the damage.
