Will Swiss sport soon be shaken by a new scandal of false Covid certificates? According to information from “Blick”, the Lucerne Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation against Granit Xhaka. The captain of the Swiss football team is suspected of having purchased false Covid certificates.

Still according to the same source, the certificates were allegedly issued by a Lucerne doctor whose office was searched in 2023 by the police, who allegedly found evidence there. Several customers are said to have obtained false certificates in order to avoid vaccination.

Granit Xhaka must be heard on this subject by the Lucerne Public Prosecutor’s Office. His hearing is scheduled for October 6, three days after the Nati match against Slovenia, in Lucerne. Contacted by “Blick”, the Public Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the opening of proceedings against the midfielder, who missed a Switzerland match in September 2021 after testing positive for Covid.

The doctor claims to have vaccinated Granit Xhaka

“Blick” also contacted the doctor’s lawyer. “My client claims to have vaccinated Granit Xhaka and everything went normally and as prescribed,” he said. The doctor and Granit Xhaka both benefit from the presumption of innocence.

For its part, the SRF questioned the Swiss Football Association (ASF) on this subject. “At present, we do not have any reliable information and therefore cannot comment on this,” explained the ASF.

In April 2026, Patrick Fischer, the coach of the Swiss ice hockey team, was fired with immediate effect after admitting to purchasing a false Covid certificate to go to the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing.
