The Italian Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes), who started in 19th position, won the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix after a crazy comeback and increased his lead at the top of the world championship on Sunday in Monza.
In front of his audience, the 20-year-old driver beat his teammate George Russell, whom he overtook four laps from the end of the race, and the Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull). The Frenchman Pierre Gasly (Alpine), who had obtained pole position to everyone’s surprise the day before, finished seventh.
40 minute break
The 13th round of the season was interrupted on Sunday on the third lap after a spectacular accident by Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) and only resumed after around 40 minutes with a new start from the grid.
Third on the grid, the Monegasque, who had pushed his British teammate Lewis Hamilton into the gravel at the first chicane, lost control of his car at the end of the second lap, in the middle of Parabolica, the last corner of the legendary Italian track.
Just after being overtaken by the Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull), Leclerc resisted an attack from the Australian Oscar Piastri (McLaren) at the entrance to this long corner, but while passing on the green border which adjoins the track, his left rear wheel skidded and the car went straight into the gravel before crashing into a wall of tires.
Despite the violent impact, the Monegasque quickly got out of his seat without outside help. A yellow flag was waved, then the safety car entered the track, before a red flag, synonymous with stopping the race, was finally brought out by the stewards in order to repair the damaged protective wall.
