Seeded N.1 in the absence of Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev continued his winning streak in three sets by beating 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) the Italian Luciano Darderi (22nd) Monday evening in the round of 16 of the US Open.
After two lackluster first rounds and won in five sets, the 29-year-old German scored a second success in a row in three sets without ever really being worried by Darderi, saving the only break point he conceded.
Despite a slight awakening in the third set, his opponent did not see the light of day, crumbling under the 42 winning shots of Zverev, still imperial in service (13 aces and 72% success in the first).
The winner of the last edition of Roland-Garros will face in the quarter-finals the Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp, 70th in the world, who defeated the French “lucky loser” Arthur Gea in five sets, after saving a match point.
The other quarter-final in this part of the table will pit the Russian Karen Khachanov (ATP 50) against the Belgian Alexander Blockx (ATP 34).
