The PISA (Program for International Student Assessment) survey, a study which assesses the academic skills of 15-year-old students every three years since 2000, was published on Tuesday. And the results, although slightly down compared to the last survey, are rather encouraging for Switzerland. Of the 91 countries tested, it is in the top 20 worldwide in all areas.
Swiss students stand out mainly in mathematics, where they obtained 499 points and ranked 9th. The ranking is dominated by China (612 points), Singapore (563) and Macau (549). At the European level, Switzerland is only ahead of Estonia (508).
In the field of science, Switzerland obtained 501 points, which places it 14th in the ranking. Here too, China, Singapore and Macau occupy the first three places in the hierarchy.
Reading performance considered worrying
Finally, in reading comprehension, Switzerland ranks 19th, far from Singapore, the world leader. On this point, the OECD is particularly concerned. Reading comprehension records “the lowest average performance ever observed”, with a decline considered “particularly worrying”.
Among our neighbors, France is just above average, but its results are clearly declining. They are the lowest ever measured since the survey was created in 2000.
