As the best global performer of the year in the discipline, she was expected. She was perhaps even more so following her repechage for the final after her fall in the semi-finals. Audrey Werro held her place Friday evening in Birmingham, during the European Athletics Championships. Big favorite for the continental title in the 800m, the Fribourgeoise ran the perfect race to win the gold medal.
Supersonic, Audrey Werro completed the double lap of the track in 1’54”81, thus breaking the championship record. She beat the British Keely Hodgkinson (1’55”01) and the Dutch Femke Broeders-Bol (1’55”54) in the most anticipated race of these Europeans.
Starting from lane 9, the CA Belfaux athlete directly took the lead in this race. She was in first position, with her rival Keely Hodgkinson, when the athletes fell back after the first turn.
Audrey Werro then gradually widened her advantage over the Briton. Despite the latter’s attack in the final straight, the Fribourgeoise held on, letting out a cry of rage as she crossed the finish line in first position.
Two other Swiss women were present in this final. Valentina Rosamilia took seventh place (1’59”42) and Veronica Vancardo (2’00”17) eighth.
Timothé Mumenthaler in bronze
European champion in 2024 in Rome, Timothé Mumenthaler won a new medal at the Europeans. The Genevan took 3rd place in the 200m, won by the German Owen Ansah. Grison’s William Reais took eighth and last place.
