Becoming on Monday the first member association to withdraw its support for Gianni Infantino in view of the next election for the presidency of FIFA, the Welsh Football Association was a pioneer. Two other European countries have followed Wales’ lead: Sweden and Serbia.
In a press release posted on its website, the Swedish Football Federation explains its decision as follows: “is based on our analysis of the evolution of the situation within FIFA over an extended period. We see recurring shortcomings in governance, transparency and management.”
She adds: “Football must be characterized by openness, responsibility and respect for democratic principles. When these values are no longer present within management, we must act. Therefore, we will work with UEFA and other national associations to find another candidate.”
Among these other UEFA national associations is also Serbia. However, the FSS officially gave it its support on May 25. “The Serbian Football Federation has withdrawn its support for Gianni Infantino for a new term as FIFA president. After careful consideration of the events which, over the past period, have seriously damaged the reputation and prestige of both FIFA and its President, this is the only logical and rational move.”
Switzerland procrastinates
According to various British media, the English Federation should also soon be part of this list. She would be on the verge of sending a letter to withdraw her support for Italo-Switzerland.
And what about Switzerland? Questioned by Blick, the Swiss Football Association (ASF) is playing for time. “We had written a letter of support before the high-profile events during the World Cup, which also displeased us. Since then, discussions have been underway, both internally and with other federations. We also wish to speak again in person with the President of FIFA,” indicates the ASF.
Gianni Infantino finds himself more and more isolated as the days progress. He would seek support from Donald Trump and his administration. However, the American president would have snubbed him, for the moment.
