Egyptian star striker Mohamed Salah signed on Thursday for two seasons with the Turkish club Trabzonspor, after nine seasons and as many trophies in England at Liverpool.
The 34-year-old signed “a two-year contract,” announced Trabzonspor, who will compete in the Europa League play-offs at the end of August.
Second highest paid player in the Premier League last season, Salah will receive 17 million euros per year (a little less than 16 million francs) excluding performance bonus, a record for the Turkish championship, his new club said in a press release.
The right winger will also receive 20% on the sales of jerseys and derivative products in his name sold by the Turkish club, detailed the latter.
The captain of the Egypt team, welcomed as a hero by thousands of supporters on Wednesday in Trabzon (north-east), must participate in a “signing ceremony” on Thursday evening in the presence of supporters in the Trabzonspor stadium.
“Everywhere I go, I win — or I try to win — something… I hope that we can accomplish great things in the championship and in the European Cup too,” declared Wednesday the new number 10 of Trabzonspor who, after Egypt, Switzerland, Italy and England, will discover a fifth championship.
The former king of Anfield scored 257 goals in 442 matches for Liverpool, with whom he won two Premier Leagues and a Champions League.
His last season with the Reds, however, was very far from his usual standards, without diminishing his popularity.
Crowned Turkish champion for the last time in 2022, Trabzonspor is the only Anatolian club to stand up to Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe and Besiktas, the three big Istanbul teams.
