American singer Britney Spears was charged Thursday with driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, the Ventura County prosecutor’s office announced, almost two months after the pop star’s arrest on a road near her home in California.
The complaint filed by the prosecution does not specify what type of drug the singer had in her blood.
A hearing is scheduled for Monday in this case, in a court in Ventura County, neighboring Los Angeles.
But Britney Spears “is not required to be present” and could simply be represented by a lawyer because it is a “minor offense,” the prosecution said in a press release.
Aged 44, the singer of “…Baby One More Time” and “Oops!… I Did It Again” was arrested on the evening of March 4, before being briefly detained and then released the following morning.
One of its representatives then described the episode as an “unfortunate and totally inexcusable incident”. In the following weeks, the singer voluntarily entered rehab.
At the upcoming hearing on Monday, the prosecutor’s office plans to propose a procedure to plead guilty to the singer, classic for cases without accidents, involving a low blood alcohol level, and where the defendants engage in detoxification treatment.
This type of agreement generally involves probation, taking a course on drunk driving and a fine, added the prosecution.
Britney Spears, who ruled the music planet in the 2000s, had an eventful life, which she returned to in her autobiography, “The Woman in Me”, published in October 2023.
“I loved drinking, but I never lost control,” she wrote, also admitting to having taken Adderall, a medication prescribed for the treatment of attention disorders and which belongs to the amphetamine family.
She returns to her poor childhood spent in the shadow of an alcoholic father, her romantic setbacks with Justin Timberlake, and the harassment of the paparazzi.
After her descent into hell in 2007, the singer was placed under the guardianship of her father Jamie Spears, who controlled her money and her private life, even while she was performing concerts in Las Vegas.
Pushed by her fans, united under the slogan “Free Britney”, the pop star ended up rebelling and American justice broke this guardianship in 2021.
