Brunswick Police Officers Arrest Murder Suspect

Juvenile Suspect Charged as an Adult

March 13, 2024 – Earlier this morning, Brunswick Police Department (BPD) officers successfully and without incident arrested Juwaun Terry Stewart, age 17, Brunswick, for the Jan. 17, 2024, murder of Tammy Sue Coates. Stewart has been in the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice for a separate offense since shortly after the investigation began.

On Jan. 22, BPD officers responded to a report of a cardiac arrest at the 300 block of Ninth Avenue in Brunswick. Upon arrival, officers met the daughter of Coates outside the residence who advised she had found her mother deceased inside. Based on initial observations, the death appeared suspicious in nature and BPD detectives responded and began their investigation. An autopsy was completed by the State Medical Examiner’s Office, which showed multiple injuries classifying the death as a homicide.  Investigators also believed a sexual assault had taken place based on evidence at the scene.

“Our detectives and officers worked tirelessly on this investigation over the last seven weeks,” said BPD Chief Kevin Grunwell. “This investigation was a coordinated effort between the BPD, Frederick County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO), Frederick Police Department (FPD) and the Frederick County States Attorney’s Office under the Maryland Criminal Intelligence Network (MCIN).

“FCSO and FPD crime scene investigators assisted with the collection and processing of evidence from the scene of the murder as well as search warrants that were executed during the investigation. Additionally, the Montgomery County Police Electronic Crimes Unit assisted with electronic warrants and Maryland State Police Lab assisted with the investigation.

“Through this collaborative effort, we were able to successfully arrest Stewart and charge him for this brutal murder.”

Based on physical and DNA evidence located throughout the investigation, Stewart has been charged as an adult with the following crimes:

  • Murder – 1st-degree
  • Rape – 1st-degree
  • Assault – 1st-degree
  • Burglary – 1st-degree
  • Home Invasion
  • Felony Theft

The Governor’s Office of Crime Prevention, Youth, and Victim Services provides grant funding and strategic support to MCIN member sites to identify, disrupt, and dismantle criminal organizations through inter-agency collaboration and data sharing to make Maryland safer.
