Lara Gut-Behrami clearly does not regret her life as a professional skier. Almost three months after announcing her retirement, the 35-year-old from Ticino is enjoying her new freedom. In a long and fascinating interview with the “Tages-Anzeiger”, she talks about her daily life, now freed from the constraints of high-level sport.
What he likes about his new life is, first of all, the end of days organized around training, travel and competitions. “I no longer have to constantly check the weather forecast or check where it’s snowing,” she said. She can now watch a movie until midnight without worrying about how she looks the next day.
The Olympic champion, however, continues to get up early and play sports. But with one major difference: she now trains for pleasure, and no longer to constantly push her limits. “When I’m tired, I no longer need to think about how to get back into shape as quickly as possible. So I can go for a walk instead of working out. It’s a real joy,” she said.
Even the 2027 Worlds were not worth the sacrifices
His serious knee injury, which occurred in November 2025, played a determining role in his decision. Rehabilitation reminded him of the sacrifices necessary to stay at the top. Even the 2027 Worlds in Crans-Montana did not succeed in changing her mind. “Even a gold medal would not have been worth the months of sacrifices I would have had to make,” she confided.
Living without the pressure of results also gives him pleasure. When the World Cup opened in Sölden, she appreciated not having to worry about snow conditions or her physical condition.
Retirement also changed his relationship with the public. Previously, the encouragement from passers-by, who asked her to win her next race, made her uncomfortable. Today, exchanges are much more relaxed. “Since I stopped competing, everything has become much more pleasant,” she assures.
He doesn’t miss skiing
And contrary to what some might imagine, he doesn’t miss skiing. For months, she waited to feel the irresistible urge to compete again. But that feeling never came.
Now turned towards her family and her professional projects, Lara Gut-Behrami seems to have definitively turned the page. And she doesn’t hide her happiness.
