The earth shook at 4:37 a.m. on Sunday near the Klausen Pass. The tremor was felt in several Swiss cantons. Other replicas are possible.
A magnitude 4.0 earthquake woke up part of central Switzerland on Sunday morning. Its epicenter was about five kilometers northeast of the Klausen Pass, at a depth of only two kilometers.
According to the Swiss Seismological Service at the ETH Zurich, the tremor was clearly felt in the region. Testimonies also came from the cantons of Bern, Aargau, Ticino, Zurich and Graubünden.
Minor damage is not excluded near the epicenter. A first aftershock was recorded shortly after the earthquake, without likely being perceived by the population.
Other tremors could occur in the coming hours or days. The risk of an earthquake as powerful, or even more powerful, remains low, but cannot be completely ruled out.
This earthquake is reminiscent of that of Linthal, which occurred in March 2017. With a magnitude of 4.6, it struck at a similar depth and in a similar area, and was felt across a large part of Switzerland.
