Star pole vaulter Armand Duplantis announced on Friday that he was giving up the 2027 indoor season, including the European Championships in Valencia (Spain) in March, in order to prepare for the outdoor season.

“I am making this decision to give my body the recovery and preparation time it needs in order to be at the best level when I return to competition,” wrote the Swede, world record holder (6.31 m), in a press release.

“I will focus on training to be fully ready for the 2027 outdoor season which will begin in May and run until the world championships in mid-September” in Beijing, specifies the 26-year-old pole vaulter.

After withdrawing from the Diamond League finals in Brussels on September 4 as a precaution while experiencing recurring leg discomfort, Mondo returned to competition a week later in Budapest for the brand new Ultimate Championships where he won the pole vault competition with a jump of 6.20m.

“I had a fantastic season this year. I love pole vaulting and I want to continue to push myself to pass even higher bars. But the season was also very trying with a very tough competition schedule this summer,” continues Duplantis, believing that he had “given himself far too much” last year and that he had “not had enough time to prepare for the intense competition schedule.”
