In an interview in “La Tribune Dimanche”, the 51-year-old journalist and producer made a half-mea culpa. He first recognizes that if the sequence was not understood, “it was therefore a failure”. But he also criticizes “the magic of social networks, where you can take a sentence out of context and start a shistorm”.
The sentence in context, here it is, recalled by “Le Dauphiné”. “If you meet Bernard Arnault, he will be hot. A minister will be as hot as you or your neighbor above or below, whether you live in the North or the South. Well no, there is this category of people who are more concerned than all the others. There are those who live under the roof. And they make it clear. So they feel entitled to speak louder because “I live under the roof!” No one cares!”
SO? Yann Barthès asserts his right to make jokes, even if they fail, notes that he wanted to be ironic about the news’ sidewalk microphones and adds that he is not “so stupid as to ignore that global warming aggravates social inequalities.”
However, he emphasizes, “did it deserve criticism and making fun of me? Certainly. Did it deserve so much hatred online, with thousands of extremely violent messages? I don’t think so.”
