Famous American jazz singer Cassandra Wilson, a Grammy Award winner, died Wednesday at the age of 70 in her hometown of Jackson, Mississippi (south), her longtime agent announced in a statement.
“Cassandra Wilson passed away peacefully, at her home, surrounded by her family, close friends and her manager,” said the latter, Robert Torre, in a statement to the media saluting the memory of a “legendary jazz artist”. The cause of death has not been released and the officer called for respect for the family’s privacy.
A singer-songwriter and producer, Cassandra Wilson was known around the world, renowned for her deep, expressive contralto tone.
Two Grammy Awards
The singer had been rewarded twice at the Grammy Awards during her career which spanned around thirty years and saw her collaborate in particular with Steve Coleman and Wynton Marsalis.
In 1997, she received the Grammy for best jazz vocal performance for her “New Moon Daughter”. Twelve years later, the Grammy for best album was awarded to him for his album “Loverly”.
