The anticyclone maintains summer conditions in Switzerland. This Friday will be sunny and warm, particularly in the mountains. The thermometer will be able to reach 31°C in the plains, while the 0°C isotherm will be located at a high altitude, around 4500 meters.
The good weather will continue during the weekend. On Saturday, the sun will dominate from Lake Geneva to Valais, while the north of the Plateau and the Jura will experience more cloudy periods in the morning before clearing up. The maximums will reach 26 to 30°C, from north to south.
Sunday looks set to be largely sunny again, despite a few cloudy patches at the end of the day. Temperatures will remain high for the season, with 27 to 30°C in the plains and a tendency to winds. In the mountains, the 0°C isotherm will even reach 4800 meters before falling again in the evening.
These conditions are explained by a high pressure situation. The air sinks, compresses and warms, which reduces humidity and helps clouds disappear. These anticyclonic situations can maintain dry and sunny weather for several days.
Up to 40°C in France
Switzerland will, however, be relatively spared compared to its neighbors. In France, the heat is rising sharply again after an already exceptional summer. Temperatures of 38 to 40°C are expected in the south of the country, with the possibility of breaking records locally for the month of September.
The phenomenon should mainly affect the South and the South-West, from Aquitaine to the north of the Alps. Météo-France underlines the remarkable nature of such temperatures in September, while specifying that this episode will remain less intense than the major heat waves of summer.
Forecaster François Gourand also notes that these late episodes are consistent with global warming, which makes late summer heat peaks more and more frequent.
Spain: 45.7°C, a September record equaled
However, it was in Spain that the thermometer soared. On Thursday, 45.7°C was recorded in El Granado, in Andalusia, according to the Spanish meteorological agency Aemet. This is the highest temperature recorded in the country since the start of the year.
This value also equals the historic Spanish record for the month of September. The previous 45.7°C was measured in Montoro, also in Andalusia, on September 6, 2016.
While the calendar already announces meteorological autumn, part of Western Europe remains confronted with fully summer temperatures, even extremes in the Iberian Peninsula.
