The devastating flood that occurred last Wednesday in the Himalayas left 987 dead in Nepal, the Nepalese emergency authority announced on Tuesday, bringing the provisional death toll from the disaster to 1,003 deaths, adding the 16 victims recorded in China.
The authorities of the two countries are also still without news of 4,462 people, 3,916 in Nepal, according to the Nepalese authority, and 546 in the Chinese territory of Tibet, according to Chinese state media.
Among the missing are several hundred tourists, pilgrims or foreign workers – 583 in Nepal from more than 30 countries and 261 in China from 23 countries, according to the same sources.
In Nepal alone, a total of 639 people employed in hydroelectric power plants or on ongoing dam projects are also still missing.
In India, authorities in the state of Uttar Pradesh also announced that they had recovered 17 bodies several dozen kilometers downstream from the disaster site. Their identification is in progress.
