Italian skier Federica Brignone, double Olympic champion in super-G and giant slalom in Cortina in February, must once again have surgery on her still painful left knee, she announced on Tuesday on her social networks.
“My leg continues to improve, but unfortunately, during certain activities and skiing, I still have pain,” Federica Brignone wrote on her Instagram account. “For this reason, with the medical team, we decided to intervene surgically,” she said.
“The main objective will be to remove the plaque and clean the area, with the possibility of also intervening on the meniscus. This last decision will be taken directly during the operation this afternoon,” added the 36-year-old Italian.
Serious injury in 2025
On April 3, 2025, ten days after her second Alpine Skiing World Cup title, Brignone seriously injured her left knee (fracture of the tibial plateau, rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament) during a giant fall at the Italian championships in Val di Fassa.
She got back on skis on November 26, 2025 and won Olympic gold just over two months later in Cortina d’Ampezzo in super-G (February 10) and giant slalom (February 15). After her triumph at the 2026 Olympics, she ended her season.
The 2026-2027 alpine ski season begins on the weekend of October 24 and 25 in Sölden (Austria) with a giant slalom. The 2027 Worlds will take place in Crans-Montana at the beginning of February.
