“Five bodies, those of three foreigners and two Nepalis, missing since last November, have been discovered,” said Biswash Karki, head of Gaurishankar municipality.
Local authorities are working to recover the bodies of the Nepalese and an Italian-Canadian, a German and an Italian, he said. The mountaineers were swept away by an avalanche in November 2025 on the slopes of Mount Yalung Ri which peaks at 5,630 meters, on the border of Nepal and Tibet.
Local people and rescuers discovered the bodies on Thursday, he added. “Since their disappearance, the army, police and local rescue teams were mobilized to find them, but their bodies were buried under thick layers of snow,” explained Mr. Karki.
According to Manoj Kumar Lama, a senior local police official, a helicopter visited the site on Friday. “Our team will evacuate the bodies by helicopter as soon as the weather improves,” he added.
Nepal is home to eight of the world’s ten highest peaks, including Everest, and welcomes hundreds of climbers and hikers each year. According to the Himalayan Database, which lists expeditions, at least 1,093 people have died on these peaks since 1950, with avalanches causing the death of nearly a third of them.
