Spanish striker Rafa Mir, sentenced in June to eight and a half years in prison for rape and assault, was loaned by Sevilla FC to the Greek club Aris Salonika, the Andalusian club announced on Tuesday.
Sevilla FC specified in a press release that the agreement between the two clubs provided for “an option to purchase” the 29-year-old player, who appealed his conviction handed down by a Valencia court.
The facts occurred on September 1, 2024 at the player’s home in the Valencian town of Bétera, after Rafa Mir and a friend met two women in a nightclub.
Complaint from two women
Mir was arrested on September 2, 2024 after the two women’s complaint and spent two nights in police custody before being released. He admitted to having sex, but claimed it was consensual. The second accused was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for sexual assault.
Mir’s club at the time, Valencia, did not dismiss him but instead gave him a two-match suspension and fined him.
Trained in Valencia, the striker played in Wolverhampton, England, then went on loan to several clubs. He then signed for Sevilla FC, with whom he played in European competitions, before being loaned to Elche. He was international with the Spanish youth teams.
