This Wednesday in Rabat, the capital of Morocco, FIFA held a crisis meeting after being bombarded with criticism due to Gianni Infantino’s plan to create an external company responsible for managing the body’s commercial activities. At the end of this, FIFA apologized and reaffirmed its “full support” for its president.
However, according to “The Times”, the media which revealed Gianni Infantino’s project and the organization of this crisis meeting, the FIFA president took advantage of his visit to Morocco to make a final attempt to save his position. He reportedly promised Morocco to host the World Cup final in exchange for its public support.
As a reminder, Morocco will organize the next World Cup, jointly with Spain, the reigning world champion, and Portugal. The competition will, however, begin with three matches in South America (Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina) to celebrate the centenary of the World Cup.
The vagueness regarding the location of the final
The location of the final of the 2030 edition is not yet known. Madrid holds the lead with its Santiago Bernabeu stadium, but Morocco is also pushing to host this event in Casablanca, in the Hassan II stadium (115,000 seats). However, its construction is not yet complete.
FIFA, however, denied such a promise: “It is false and misleading to state that the FIFA President has made any promise regarding the organization of the 2030 World Cup final. FIFA will make a decision in due course.”
