The 33-year-old Celta Vigo player, with substitute status in the selection, is known for his stance against racism and homophobia.
In an interview published Friday with the Spanish magazine Panenka specializing in football, he assured that he would comply with Fifa protocol, marked by the presence of Donald Trump who must hand over the trophy to the winner.
“I don’t want to go to prison (laughs),” Iglesias said. I hope to greet him at a time when we will all be very happy, and that it will pass very quickly and that I can forget.
“I think this is not the time to create controversy, people know perfectly well what I think. I would love to do a lot of things but the reality is that even though people think I’m all-powerful, I don’t have that much power to tackle certain things,” he continued.
In the past, Iglesias notably opposed the then president of the Spanish Football Federation Luis Rubiales, in the affair of the non-consensual kiss given to player Jenni Hermoso in 2023. He also spoke out in favor of pro-Palestinian demonstrations.
