Firing coach Petkovic would cost Algeria a fortune

Keep Vladimir Petkovic or pay a high price? This is the headache facing the Algerian Football Federation after the elimination of the Fennecs in the round of 16 of the World Cup against Switzerland (2-0).

Former Nati coach between 2014 and 2021, the 62-year-old technician has never completely convinced since his arrival in February 2024. However, a few weeks before the World Cup, the Algerian federation granted him a contract extension until 2028 in order to guarantee the stability of the selection.

According to several Algerian media, this confidence could already be shattered. But parting ways with Vladimir Petkovic would not be without financial consequences. According to Afrik Foot, a dismissal could cost nearly five million euros, his salary having been revised upwards during his recent extension.

The Algerian Federation, however, believes that a clause in the contract would allow it to end the collaboration by only paying the equivalent of two months’ salary, or around 320,000 euros.

Vladimir Petkovic does not share this reading. The former coach of Young Boys, FC Sion, FC Lugano, Lazio Rome, Girondins de Bordeaux and the Swiss team intends to assert his rights. In the event of a breakup, the dispute could be resolved before the competent authorities, further increasing the bill for a possible divorce.
